BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used for decades to soften creases and wrinkles that make us look older. In your 20s, baby-smooth skin is the norm. But as the years pass, expression lines become more exaggerated. BOTOX® injections safely and effectively relax the activity that causes these facial creases.
In Las Vegas, the cosmetic practice of Dr. Jeffrey Roth is proud to offer BOTOX® Cosmetic injections among our non-surgical treatments and services. Please contact us today to schedule an appointment. We are an Allergan Black Diamond provider, which means we are in the top 1 percent of BOTOX® practices nationwide.
What is BOTOX® Used for?
BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are used to soften fine lines caused by facial expressions. These “dynamic” wrinkles form when you smile, frown, squint, laugh and knit your brow together. Your skin is folded every time the muscles in your face contract. The repeated folding gets more pronounced as the years pass, and eventually the lines remain even after you’ve relaxed your face.
The following creases can be smoothed with BOTOX® injections:
- Vertical creases between the eyebrows (glabellar lines/frown lines)
- Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes
- Horizontal lines across the forehead
- Lines above the upper lip (“smoker’s lines”)
The injections temporarily freeze the contractions causing these wrinkles. It’s a completely harmless effect. The purified botulinum toxin Type A protein blocks nerve signals that would otherwise prompt the muscular contraction. Far from causing a frozen look, BOTOX® Cosmetic in the hands of an experienced provider leads to a naturally more youthful appearance. Many people love the renewed sense of confidence they feel because they know that their faces aren’t wrinkled and furrowed in video chats, face-to-face meetings, social and personal interactions, and in photos.
BOTOX® injections are also used for excessive underarm sweating, overactive bladder, chronic migraines and neck spasms.
BOTOX® Cosmetic FAQs
Dr. Roth and our team are here to help you get the information and answers you need. If you’ve never tried BOTOX® Cosmetic before, you may have lots of questions, and we are here to provide answers. We’ve listed some of the most common below, but we are available to answer what questions we can over the phone and arrange a consultation for you with Dr. Roth.
How long does BOTOX® last?
3-4 months. The effect is easily restored with another injection appointment.
At what age should you start getting BOTOX®?
There really isn’t a wrong or right age. Instead, it depends on the type of wrinkles you have. Some people start getting BOTOX® Cosmetic as early as their 20s, to fend off the irritated, angry look of furrowing between the brows (frown lines). Other people don’t receive BOTOX® until they notice a marked change in their facial appearance, in their mid to late thirties or beyond.
It’s important to be realistic about what these injections can achieve. In your 40s, 50s, 60s and older, deep-set folds caused by sagging, loose skin will not be treatable with BOTOX®; these are not expression-caused wrinkles. Instead, a facelift or another procedure may be recommended to lift and tighten sagging tissue.
Does BOTOX® make you look older after it wears off?
No, this is somewhat of a persistent myth. As the BOTOX® fades, it simply unblocks the muscular activity that folds the skin. It will be the same activity as before. Having said that, wrinkles will become more exaggerated because of the aging process.
The BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment Process
BOTOX® appointments are quick and painless. The injections themselves take only a few minutes. The prick of the needle may feel like a slight pinch or mild sting, but it goes away quickly.
You may experience redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness at the injection site for a couple days. Cosmetics are appropriate for concealing any discoloration. The full effect of BOTOX® Cosmetic takes some time to build, about 3-7 days.
It is generally best practice to get the injections 1-2 weeks before any big social events, such as weddings, reunions, parties, etc. Two weeks allows plenty of time for the results to reach their maximum effect and for bruising to disappear.
Don’t touch, rub or massage the injection site for least 6 hours, and preferably for 24 hours. Doing so could displace the injected material or interfere with healing skin. Also, plan to be up and about 4 hours after the injections: at least don’t lie down flat. Lying horizontally may also affect the way the BOTOX® settles.
