Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the labia minora, (inner labia), that covers the vaginal opening. It is the most commonly performed vaginal rejuvenation procedure.

How Is Labiaplasty Performed?

The methods Dr. Roth uses for labiaplasty are tailored specifically to the individual patient and her goals for the procedure. The most common need is to reduce the labia minora, which are situated inside the labia majora. To reduce these tissues, Dr. Roth uses two methods. In a “wedge” incision, a vertical wedge of labia minor tissue is removed. In an “edge” excision, he removes tissue along the edge of the lips. In many cases, extra folds of the clitoral hood are also reduced at the same time.

In cases where the labia majora are too large and uncomfortable, Dr. Roth will remove an elliptical-pattern piece of tissue through a small, hidden incision.

The procedure takes a variable amount of time, depending on the extent of your particular anatomy, tissues, and procedure.

Labiaplasty Consultation

Dr. Roth will first listen to your concerns and goals. Some patients bring in photos from publications to demonstrate desired look and size. He will then gather a thorough medical history. Past medical events may impact your surgery, anesthesia, and recovery. Current issues such as; medications, herbal remedies, allergies, smoking, drug use, bleeding and scarring tendencies, will be reviewed. Chronic issues, (e.g. diabetes, high blood pressure, auto immune disease), are also important.

Dr. Roth will examine you and will describe not only what he sees, but also how it relates to your appearance or other issues. He will then explain what might be done to improve each area medically or surgically.

You may not wish to take advantage of every treatment that is available, but at least you can know about available options and what each might offer.

Pre-Procedure for Vaginal Rejuvenation

Many things can effect the success of the procedure, the subsequent healing process, and final result. Clearly, issues effecting your general health and ability to heal can impact the process, but more subtle issues and practices can also make a significant impact.. It is imperative that patients refrain from ingesting any medications or other substances that could potentially cause surgical complications. A list of medications should be reviewed and selected medications discontinued at least two weeks prior to the procedure.

Patients undergo a general physical examination prior to their surgery. This is to ensure that no underlying medical problems exist that may interfere with the safety of their surgery. The Anesthesiologist may have specific criteria to be met. Appropriate consultation, (Cardiology, Pulmonary, etc.) may be requested to address any issues. Any issues, however trivial they may seem, should be reported. For example, a seemingly innocent minor infection can result in a surgical wound infection, and so must be treated prior to surgery. Likewise, hypertension must be under control. Blood pressure medicines are typically taken right up to the time of your procedure. Cigarette smoking has a significant impact on wound healing and needs to be discontinued prior to the operation. Serious wound healing complications can occur in patients who are exposed to smoke, even passively. The risk of wound healing problems decreases after one quits. Appropriate timing of surgery after cessation of tobacco exposure can be discussed.

Preoperative photographs are taken. They assist in the planning of the procedure and in reviewing the improvement afterwards. Postoperative photographs are generally taken at 3 and 6 months after your procedure as well. You will be asked to sign a surgical consent, which enumerates the risks of the procedure in detail. Some of these risks have been reviewed here, but are also discussed at the consultation.

Appropriate prescriptions are written, (e.g. pain pills, so that you will be able to take them when you return home).

You will need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from the surgery center. Patients cannot drive after surgery, and for 10 days afterward. Recently sedated patients will not be placed into taxis for transport home. Medical transportation can be arranged in the event that you cannot find someone. It is also mandatory to have someone stay with you for the first few days after surgery, for your comfort and safety.

Day of Labiaplasty Surgery

After arrival at the surgicenter. The nursing staff will register you and have you change into the appropriate gown.

The choice of anesthetic will be made with input from the Patient, Surgeon and Anesthesiologist. Continuous monitoring of your vital signs is carried out throughout the operation.

There are different choices in Labioplasty. These are determined by the individual’s anatomy, tissues, and goals.

The procedure takes a variable amount of time, depending on the extent of your particular anatomy, tissues, and procedure.

What Is Recovery Like After Labiaplasty?

After your surgery, there will be some swelling and pain. This can be lessened with icing for 20 minutes on and then 20 minutes off for the first day or two. You’ll need to restrict your activity to low-key options for the first five days after surgery. It’s a good idea to have someone help around the house. You won’t feel like cooking or doing any housework for a few days. Exercise will have to wait for 2-3 weeks, in most cases. Sexual intercourse needs to wait for at least 4-6 weeks. This is important, as engaging in sex too soon after labiaplasty risks tearing the incisions. Likewise, tampons must be avoided for six weeks. If minor trimming was performed, your recovery may be faster and not as involved.

Labiaplasty FAQs

Q: What results should I expect with labiaplasty?

A: Your results are immediate, but there will be some swelling. In a week or two your results should be fully realized. After this surgery, most patients have reduced chafing and physical discomfort, an improved sex life, and a boost in confidence.

Q: How long will my results last with labiaplasty?

A: These are permanent changes made by Dr. Roth with these procedures. The tissue removed in these surgeries is gone for good. It will not grow again and become a nuisance.

Q: How painful is recovery after labiaplasty?

A: There are many nerves in the tissues involved in these procedures. But that doesn’t mean these are overly painful recoveries. If you follow the recovery instructions we provide, your pain can be mitigated quite successfully.

Q: What are the risks involved with labiaplasty?

A: Thanks to the highly vascular nature of the vaginal area, risks with this surgery are low. The risks are for potential chronic dryness, possible pain during intercourse, and loss of sensation. Loss of sensation is a higher risk the more tissue that is removed, but the risks are still quite low.

Q: Does labiaplasty leave visible scarring?

A: The scars from these procedures are very small. Plus, they can be effectively hidden in the natural creases of the area, making them virtually invisible moving forward. Thanks to the board-certified surgical expertise and experience of Dr. Roth, you’ll be happy with your results and the lack of visible scarring.

Q: How long after labiaplasty can I take a bath?

A: While you can shower a day or two after your surgery, you should avoid taking baths until your incisions have healed completely, which typically takes about 4 weeks. The same goes for swimming and any other activities that involve submerging your incisions.

Q: How can I speed up my labiaplasty recovery?

A: In terms of how to speed up labiaplasty recovery, it all comes down to closely following your aftercare instructions. These include limiting your physical activity, keeping the area as clean and dry as possible, getting plenty of rest, abstaining from sexual activity, and icing the area to manage swelling and discomfort. It’s also a good idea to eat nutrient-rich foods, stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol or smoking.

Q: Does labiaplasty affect sensation or sensitivity?

A: No nerve endings are removed, damaged, or compromised during a labiaplasty, so it should not cause sensation loss in the area in any way. However, many women find that removing excess labia tissue does increase their comfort, as well as their confidence, during intimacy.
