How Long Does Swelling Last After a Tummy Tuck?

Swelling is a natural part of the healing process after tummy tuck surgery. Still, how do you know what’s considered a “normal” amount of swelling? While every patient varies, in general, here’s what to expect during the stages of swelling after a tummy tuck:

  • 1 to 2 weeks post-op: Swelling peaks a few days after surgery; wearing a compression garment is helpful.
  • 3 to 4 weeks post-op: Swelling begins to subside, but it may still be considerable.
  • 1 to 3 months post-op: Gradual reduction in swelling continues.
  • 3 to 6 months post-op: Swelling is largely resolved, but wearing a compression garment is still recommended for many patients.
  • 6 to 12 months post-op: Swelling subsides, and the full results of your procedure are visible.

How To Reduce Swelling After a Tummy Tuck

Studies show that excessive heat and sun exposure can increase swelling after surgery. However, you can take several steps to minimize the adverse effects of heat and post-tummy tuck swelling if your procedure is performed in a hot climate:

  • Wear your compression garment to reduce swelling and support your new abdominal contours.
  • Sleep on your back with your torso elevated to protect incisions and minimize tension and swelling.
  • Stay hydrated to promote circulation and healing.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure, especially during the hottest parts of the day (usually between 2 to 6 p.m.).
  • Use cold compresses on the surgical area for additional comfort and relief.
  • Follow your post-op protocol, including avoiding strenuous activities that can increase swelling.

When Should I Worry About Swelling After Surgery?

As discussed earlier, swelling is a normal part of the recovery process. However, it’s helpful to know what to expect and what’s cause for concern. After a tummy tuck, most patients experience moderate swelling that gradually subsides.

However, you should contact my office if you experience any of these occurrences:

  • A sudden increase in swelling.
  • Swelling accompanied by pain, redness, warmth, or fever.
  • Persistent swelling that doesn’t gradually improve.
