Veteran Boxing Writer Kevin Iole reports that former Middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik (36-2, 32 KOs) has voluntarily checked himself into the Betty Ford Center to get treatment for alcohol abuse.

Many in the boxing community have noticed that Pavlik just hasn’t been himself the past few months. He recently was scheduled to fight on the undercard of the Pacquiao vs. Margarito event in Dallas, TX but he pulled out with a rib injury less than two weeks before the bout.

As evidenced in many fights, Kelly has tremendous heart and courage. Personally, Pavlik vs. Taylor is one of my favorite bouts. As a plastic surgeon who often attends to fighters in Las Vegas, I have been privileged to meet Kelly in person. I have always found him to be friendly, engaging, and very “down to earth”. I am very glad that he has committed to this fight and is determined to beat the formidable opponent of alcohol dependency.

He has the backing of his family, friends, fans and I am sure the entire boxing community. All of us wish him the best and hopefully we will see him back in the ring soon.
