In Japan, palm reading remains a popular way to tell one’s fortune and predict the future. A recent article enlightens us to a new trend where a Plastic Surgeon is being called upon to lengthen or even create lines in the palm. Patients believe that if the line is changed, their fate and fortune will be changed as well.

The most common requests for men are usually business and money related and include the fate line, the money-luck line and the financial line. These three lines can come together to create a line called the “emperor’s line.” Not surprisingly, the “emperor’s line” is a typical request among men.

The most common request for women is to create a marriage line. Sometimes the line is not there at all, or sometimes it appears very short, suggesting that the woman is to marry early. If opportunity for marriage has not already come, women can now extend their line, and potentially their marriage window of opportunity. Some women are less interested in marriage lines than they are in romance lines, regardless of their marital status.

The “romance” line is made with an electric scalpel. Dr. Takaaki Matsuoka, a plastic surgeon at the Shonan Beauty Clinic, found this technique to be the most straightforward and long lasting. The doctor also had to expand his palm reading prowess. His patient’s may draw desired lines on the palm, and the doctor may suggest lines that may need more emphasis.

Results are, of course, anecdotal. Some have won the lottery, some have gotten married. Do the new lines give confidence that may help garner success? Are future suitors gazing at palms over dinner? Time will tell if this new trend will continue in the future. As for now, it is still a bit hard to predict…
