  • New Jersey Woman Arrested for Performing Illegal Plastic Surgery Procedures

By Dr. Jeffrey J. Roth Tue, February 01, 2011 10:51 am MDT

Recently a New Jersey woman, Yamile Mattros, 47, was arrested at her Park Avenue home after undercover investigators were sent to the converted garage in her home where she allegedly performed illegal plastic surgery procedures including buttocks injections and Botox.

Mattros was charged with practicing medicine without a license, possession with intent to distribute a prescription drug, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Local police said she offered a female undercover investigator Botox injections to remove facial wrinkles, and buttocks augmentation injections.

New Jersey Attorney General Paula T. Dow said, “Medical procedures performed by unlicensed individuals put the public at unnecessary risk. We know of one case where the patient died following cosmetic surgery performed by someone other than a licensed physician.” In 2007, a Marlboro woman was found dead inside a Rahway home where she apparently had undergone cosmetic surgery by someone without a medical license.

I blog about the dangers of un-certified plastic and cosmetic surgery practitioners operating in un-certified facilities to promote awareness about health and well-being. Hopefully someday the public will realize that undergoing plastic surgery procedures in a converted garage by an unlicensed individual is a bad idea. Before undergoing any medical procedure, I urge all patients to do their homework. Find out about your plastic surgeon's medical training, injectable training, and experience. Find out about the facility where you are having the procedure performed. Good places to start are your state’s medical board website, the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Gather enough information about your doctor and their experience to make knowledgeable decision. Your safety and health depends on it.
