What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also called “liposculpture” or just “lipo,” is a plastic surgery procedure used to shrink fatty deposits, recontour areas of the body, and achieve better proportions.

The most common liposuction treatment areas include the following:

While lipo is often a cosmetic procedure, it does have its reconstructive uses. It is an effective method for removing fatty or fibrous tissue secondary to disease and extracting fat to be placed elsewhere in the body.

How Is Liposuction Performed?

Dr. Roth creates tiny incisions near your targeted areas—typically about half an inch. Through these incisions, he inserts a small, thin tube called a cannula. He saturates fat cells with a tumescent solution that further numbs the tissue and makes it easier to remove. The solution also decreases bruising. The cannula breaks up and suctions the fat away and leaves you with a slimmer and more sculpted silhouette. The small incisions are closed with sutures.

How Much Fat Can I Have Removed at One Time?

This depends on your anatomy and your goals. There are certain limits on how much liposuction you can have at one time. You and Dr. Roth will discuss your priority areas and design a custom treatment plan for optimal results during your consultation.

What Is Recovery Like After Liposuction?

It’s normal to experience some soreness, swelling, and bruising for a few days after liposuction. Most people find any discomfort is easily controlled with prescribed pain medication. Ice packs can decrease swelling and soreness.

In most cases, your post-operative compression garment will serve as your “dressing.” The extra pressure this garment provides helps reduce swelling and discomfort. You may shower after the removal of the garment 3 days after the procedure. The garment must be worn full-time for 6 weeks, then half-time for 4 weeks.

Although you will be up and around in a day or two, you should plan to take it a little slower the first week. You will be up and walking on the first day after the surgery. We will examine you 3 to 4 days after the procedure, and your stitches will be removed about a week after surgery.

When Can I Return to Work & Exercise After Liposuction?

You may return to desk work as you feel able. Most people return within a few days. If your job is more physical, you may wait longer.

Do not do anything that requires straining or heavy exercise for at least 2 weeks. Prolonged sun exposure is discouraged for at least the first few months.

When Will I See My Liposuction Results?

Everyone responds differently to an operation. Although you’ll likely notice a difference right away, it may take some time for swelling to subside enough for you to accurately appreciate your results. Expect to look your best after the first few months.

Can Liposuction Be Combined With Other Procedures?

Yes, Dr. Roth frequently uses liposuction as an enhancement to other procedures, including tummy tuck and Mommy Makeover. He’ll discuss the benefits of these procedures and whether they are right for you during your consultation.

A Few More Liposuction FAQs

Q: Does the fat come back after liposuction?

A: While weight loss works by shrinking existing fat cells, liposuction works by removing those cells entirely. Once your fat cells are suctioned out via liposuction, they are gone for good. It will still be possible for you to gain weight after the surgery, but you will gain it more evenly across your body as opposed to primarily carrying it in your “problem areas.” As long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid any major weight fluctuations, your results will last indefinitely.

Q: Does liposuction get rid of cellulite?

A: Cellulite happens when fibrous bands pull down on your skin’s surface, creating a dimpled look. Because liposuction only addresses fat, it is not an effective cellulite reduction treatment.

Q: How much weight can you lose with liposuction?

A: Liposuction is not intended to be a weight loss procedure. It’s better to think of it as a cosmetic complement to a healthy lifestyle and a way to slim down stubborn areas that resist diet and exercise. Current guidelines recommend removing no more than 11 pounds of fat (5 liters) during a single liposuction procedure, but state limits vary.

Q: Does liposuction leave scars?

A: Liposuction leaves behind very tiny scars, typically smaller than an inch. The incisions are only made to insert a thin cannula through which the fat is removed, so there is a very minimal cosmetic effect. Dr. Roth often disguises these scars in natural folds or easily covered areas.

Q: How long does liposuction last?

A: Liposuction results last a lifetime as long as you remain committed to maintaining your weight through a healthy diet and exercise.

Q: Can an obese person get liposuction?

A: You’ll see the best results and have the best experience if you wait until you are at or near your goal weight before having liposuction done. To keep any risk of complications as low as possible, we recommend your BMI be 30 or under at the time of your procedure.
