  • China Tightens Oversight of Cosmetic Surgery Industry

By Dr. Jeffrey J. Roth Mon, January 03, 2011 10:28 am MDT

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that The Chinese Ministry of Health will standardize surgical practices to promote safer development of the industry. This is largely in response to the demise of aspiring singer Wang Bei, a former contestant on China’s reality TV show “Super Girl,” the Chinese equivalent of our "American Idol."

Demand for cosmetic surgery in China is increasing rapidly. China performed the world’s second highest number of procedures in 2009, second only to the United States, according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

The top five surgical procedures performed in China in 2009 included: breast implants, liposuction, eyelid lifts, nose jobs and tummy tucks, according to the ISAPS. A surgery known as the “double lid” Blepharoplasty, an eye lift, has become popular with Asian women as they attempt to create an aesthetically pleasing double fold on their upper eyelids.

Despite the rise of the industry, problems are rampant and point to a need for more qualified medical staff and regulatory measures, Xinhua cited Zhang Mao, the Deputy Health Minister, as saying.

We hope that China takes the appropriate steps to ensure that patients can have the procedures they desire, while also being safe and effective. When China puts its mind to a project, they usually make it happen. We in the United States are fortunate to have bodies such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery to set standards of training and practice.
