  A Plastic Surgeon's Perspective on Saturday's WBC Middleweight Championship Bout

  In addition to my passion and professional career as a plastic surgeon, I am also an avid boxing fan. Fortunately,  I have the honor and privilege to tend to the wounds of fighters as a post-fight plastic surgeon in Las Vegas. I do this for Bob Arum’s Top Rank Boxing. It has been a blessing to contribute my experience and knowledge as a board certified plastic surgeon to the great  sport of boxing. I have also been able to meet, and on occassion mend, some of the greatest fighters ever to step into the ring.

  Two undefeated fighters tangle this weekend at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA. As the famous ring announcer once said, “Someone’s “ O”, must go…”

  

  The first fighter is the son of a living legend: Julio Ceasar Chavez, Jr. (42-0-1, 30 KOs), of Culiacan, México. While Junior has amassed an outstanding record, many were hoping to see more from him. He favors fighting from the inside, like his famous father. His body habitus is quite different from his dad as Junior is tall and lanky. In his fight against a very sporting John Duddy, he impressed many in the Alamodome, including yours truly, by using his superior arm length with a good jab. His preparation for that fight with the best trainer in the business, Freddie Roach, was the key factor. Junior has continued to work out with Roach at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, home of many great fighters. Indeed, Junior recently sparred with Vanes Martirosyan. This will hopefully put him in good shape for this challenge. He will be attempting to join a special group of father and son champions including Floyd & Tracy Patterson, Leon & Cory Spinks, Wilfredo & Wilfredo Jr. Vasquez and Guty & Guty Jr. Espadas. 

  The World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion is Sebastian Zbik (30-0, 10 KOs), of Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. He is a tough competitor, who is not going to relinquish his belt easily.

  If Julio Ceasar Chavez, Jr. wins, it will be the first time a Mexican has been a WBC middleweight champion. If Sepastian Zbik wins, it will be the first German to win a title fight in the U.S. since Max Schmeling.

  A good undercard will also be in place. World Champion Christy Martin comes back from great personal tragedy as she goes for her 50th win against Dakota Stone in a rematch of their 2009 battle. Other interesting fights include Vanes Martirosyan vs. Saul Roman and undefeated Mikey Garcia vs. Miguel Beltran Jr. Looks like it is going to be quite a night. Can’t wait for the bell…
