  • Breast Augmentation Increases 40% Over Past Decade

By Dr. Jeffrey J. Roth Mon, April 11, 2011 10:52 am MDT

As mentioned in a recent New York Times article, breast augmentation continues to be a popular surgery among women of all ages in the United States.

In 2010, 296,203 breast implant procedures were done by plastic surgeons, a 2 percent increase over 2009, and a 39 percent jump since 2000. Female patients in the Mountain and coastal Pacific states are most likely to receive breast enhancement surgery, and they account for almost 40 percent of all breast augmentation procedures. Major metropolitan in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Las Vegas obviously attribute to the higher volume of breast augmentation procedures in Western states.

Breast lifts accounted for 90,000 plastic surgery procedures last year. This is a 9 percent increase since 2009, and a 70 percent increase since 2000. Breast reduction surgery was performed by plastic surgeons 82,871 times. This is an increase of 6 percent from the year before, but still 2 percent lower than 2000. In addition, 18,280 male breast reduction operations were performed.

Breast implant removal was performed by plastic surgeons 21,700 times. That’s 9 percent more of these procedures than in 2009, but a drop of 47 percent since 2000. Hopefully, overall this trend indicates that the cosmetic surgery industry and the new technology available for breast enhancement procedures has improved.

Breast augmentation surgery is a procedure with a very high patient satisfaction rate. We anticipate that demand will continue to grow.

As with any procedure, always best to talk to a board certified plastic surgeon. There one can discuss goals and see if they are a surgical candidate. Together the patient and plastic surgeon can make a plan to achieve the goals with appropriate safety and success.
