  • 2010 Plastic Surgery Trends in the U.K. and U.S.

British Spent Over $3 Billion Dollars on Cosmetic Surgery in 2010

A recent article details a survey that found Britons spent 2.3 billion pounds, equivalent to $3 billion U.S., on cosmetic surgery in 2010.

The poll surveyed approximately 2,630 people. 25% of those polled would consider having a plastic surgery procedure such as liposuction, breast augmentation and implants, or a facelift. The daily U.K. Sun reported that 20% of those questioned were interested in having their teeth whitened after seeing X Factor judge Cheryl Cole’s brightened smile. However, those poled stated they don't want to end up looking silicone-enhanced,  like Katie Price, according to YouGov, who conducted the poll.

Alarmingly, 16% of the British survey respondents say they would go abroad for cut-price surgery. Hopefully, news of the Claudia Aderotimi tragedy will convince would-be cosmetic surgery candidates from seeking low-cost treatment.

Although 2010 financial numbers spent on cosmetic and plastic surgery in the United States aren't available yet, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that over 13.1 million plastic surgery procedures were performed throughout that U.S. last year, a 10% increase over 2009. In the U.S., the top five plastic surgery procedures were breast augmentation, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, liposuction, and tummy tucks. The popularity of facial injectables, like Botox, also continues to rise.
