A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty is a popular procedure for patients looking to achieve a more pleasing contour on their abdomen. After significant weight-loss or after pregnancy, a patient may have excess tissue in their midsection. A tummy tuck is a surgical option for removing that tissue and tightening up the abdomen area. In this video, Dr. Roth explains the difference between a full and mini tummy tuck and discusses the recovery time for each procedure.

Full Tummy Tuck

During a full tummy tuck, the doctor will remove excess tissue in the abdomen area. Over time, your six-pack (rectus) muscles often tend to stretch and splay out. For most tummy tuck patients, the doctor will usually help tighten these abdominal muscles with a placation procedure, which basically takes the rectus muscles and puts them back together again.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck addresses a smaller area of the abdomen, namely the soft tissue below the belly button and above the pubis. This procedure helps to trim away any extra skin in that area and does not involve moving the rectus muscles.

Which procedure is right for me?

With the full tummy tuck, the doctor will likely remove more tissue and move the rectus muscles back together. The mini tummy tuck may be a good option for patients looking to focus on excess skin of the lower abdomen area alone, between the belly button and pubis. To find out which procedure may be right for you, it’s best to set up a consultation with Dr. Roth. During your consultation, Dr. Roth will listen to your concerns and goals, review your medical history, and offer explanations of what may done to improve the area.

What is the recovery time for a tummy tuck?

A patient’s recovery time for a tummy tuck depends on the extent of the procedure, how tight the muscles are after the procedure, and what the patient does for a living. If a patent is employed as a nurse and needs to be on her feet, twisting, bending, or pushing, then she will need more recovery time than a patient who works at a desk job. While recovery truly depends on the patient and the procedure, most people are usually back at work a couple of weeks after their tummy tuck procedure.
